- 2 out of 3 Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime.
- Australia has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world, with South-East Queensland having the highest skin cancer incidence in the country.
- Melanoma is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia, with the highest incidence rate of melanoma in the world.
- Around 2,000 deaths from skin cancer occur in Australia every year.
Early Detection
The sooner a skin cancer is identified and treated, the better your chance of avoiding surgery, potential disfigurement, or even death. Regular skin checks and early detection are crucial.
Signs to look for
- Any crusty, non-healing sores.
- Small lumps that are red, pale, or pearly in color.
- New spots, freckles, or any moles changing in size, color, or shape.
Treatment and prevention
- Skin cancers are almost always removed. In more advanced cases, surrounding tissue may also be removed.
- Certain skin cancers can also be treated with ointments, liquid nitrogen, curettage (scraping), or cautery (burning).
- Prevention is key. We recommend a combination of sun protection measures, including wearing sun-protective clothing, applying SPF 50 sunscreen, wearing a hat, seeking shade, and wearing sunglasses.
